This Privacy Policy explains how WoodSnap (“WoodSnap”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses and shares information when you use the WoodSnap – Wood Identifier mobile app and related services (the “Service”). WoodSnap is operated by Nexdev.
At a glance
A short summary. The full policy below is what applies.
- Your photos power identification. They are sent to our AI providers for analysis and saved in your scan history so you can come back to your results.
- No sign-up, no login. WoodSnap doesn’t ask for your name, email address or password.
- No ads, no selling data. WoodSnap doesn’t display advertising or sell your information. We use analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve it.
- You stay in control. Delete individual scans from inside the app, or ask us to delete all of your data.
Information We Collect
Link to section: Information We CollectWe collect the following kinds of information. Each is explained in more detail in the sections that follow.
Information you provide
- Photos you take or choose for identification, and images you attach in the AI assistant.
- Scan history and collection: identification results, notes you add, and items you save or mark as liked.
- Messages you send to the AI assistant.
- Support requests: what you send us by email, including the technical details the app adds to the message.
Information collected automatically
- A random app identifier that links your scan history to your copy of the app.
- Usage information, such as the screens and features you use.
- Device information, such as your device model, operating system, app version and identifiers.
Photos and Camera Access
Link to section: Photos and Camera AccessWoodSnap asks for permission to use your camera so you can photograph an item, and for access to your photo library when you choose an existing picture. The app only uses these permissions for features you start, and you can change them at any time in your device settings. Without camera access, you won’t be able to take new photos in the app.
What happens to a photo
- Before upload, the app resizes and compresses the photo on your device.
- The photo is then sent over an encrypted connection to WoodSnap’s servers and to our AI providers for identification (see AI Identification Processing).
- We store a copy of the photo with the scan in your history so you can view it later. Deleting a scan deletes its stored photo.
Photo metadata
Photos can contain embedded metadata, such as the date or place a picture was taken, if your camera recorded it. The app’s compression step usually removes this metadata, but a photo that is already small enough may be uploaded unchanged. WoodSnap does not ask for access to your device’s location.
WoodSnap is designed to identify objects, not people. Please avoid photographing people, documents or other personal information.
AI Identification Processing
Link to section: AI Identification ProcessingWoodSnap uses third-party artificial intelligence (AI) models to analyze your photos and generate results.
How identification works
- When you scan an item, your photo and a set of instructions are sent from our servers to OpenRouter, a service that routes requests to AI model providers.
- Requests are currently handled by Google Gemini models. OpenAI models are used as a fallback if the primary model is unavailable.
- The model returns an identification, such as a likely wood species, furniture style or craft type, together with descriptive information. We save this to your scan history.
These providers process requests under their own terms and privacy policies, and may keep request data for a limited time as those policies describe.
Shared reference information
General information about an identified item, such as a species profile with its properties, uses and care notes, may be saved in a shared WoodSnap reference library and shown to other people who scan similar items. This reference information does not include your photo, your notes or anything that identifies you.
To illustrate results, we send the name of the identified item, not your photo, to Serper, an image search service, to find public reference pictures.
AI assistant
When you use the AI assistant, your messages, any images you attach and, if you ask about a scanned item, details of that scan are sent to the same AI providers to generate a reply. WoodSnap’s servers do not save assistant conversations.
Model training and human review
We do not use your photos or messages to train AI models. Results are generated automatically. We only look at a specific scan if you ask us to, for example when you contact support about it, or when it is needed to investigate abuse or fix a problem.
AI results can be wrong
Identifications and estimates are not professional opinions. See the AI Identification Disclaimer in our Terms of Service.
Account Information
Link to section: Account InformationWoodSnap has no sign-up or login. We never ask for your name, email address, phone number or a password.
To keep your scan history and collection available to you, the app creates a random identifier the first time you open it. This identifier is not linked to your name or contact details. The credentials that go with it are kept in your device’s secure storage.
Because there is no login, your history is tied to your installation of the app. If you delete the app or change devices, you may lose access to your previous scans.
Usage Information
Link to section: Usage InformationWe use Firebase Analytics, provided by Google, to understand how WoodSnap is used. It records events such as:
- screens viewed and features used;
- app opens, sessions and engagement, which Firebase collects automatically.
Analytics data is linked to your random app identifier, not to your name or contact details.
We also keep the records needed to provide the Service, such as your scan history and logs of requests made to our servers.
Device Information
Link to section: Device InformationWhen you use WoodSnap, we and our service providers receive technical information such as:
- your device model, operating system and version;
- the app version, and your language and region settings;
- your IP address, which our servers and providers receive when your device connects to them. Firebase uses it to estimate your general location, such as your country or city;
- identifiers such as the Firebase app-instance ID and, depending on your device and settings, your device’s advertising identifier.
When you contact support from the app, the email it prepares includes your app identifier, platform, app version and a timestamp to help us assist you. You can review or remove these details before sending.
WoodSnap does not show ads and does not ask for permission to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies.
How We Use Information
Link to section: How We Use InformationWe use the information described above to:
- identify items in your photos and show you the results;
- save your scan history, collection and notes;
- answer your questions in the AI assistant;
- show reminders and notifications you have allowed. These are scheduled on your device; WoodSnap doesn’t use a push notification service;
- understand how the app is used, fix problems and improve WoodSnap;
- respond to support requests and feedback;
- protect the Service, prevent abuse and fraud, and comply with legal obligations.
Read-aloud uses your device’s built-in text-to-speech engine.

Other disclosures
We may also disclose information if we believe it is required by law or legal process, to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets. In that case, this policy continues to apply to your information.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for targeted advertising.
Data Storage and Retention
Link to section: Data Storage and RetentionWhere your data is stored
Your scan history and photos are stored on servers operated for us by Fly.io in Frankfurt, Germany. Some of the providers listed in Third-Party Services process data in other countries, including the United States (see International Users).
On your device, WoodSnap stores your preferences, such as language and appearance, your app credentials in secure storage, and cached images.
How long we keep it
- Scan history: for as long as you keep using WoodSnap. Deleting a scan removes it and its photo. If you ask us to delete your data, we remove your scan history, photos and notes from our database.
- Backups: copies may remain in backups for a limited period before they are overwritten.
- Analytics data: kept for the retention period set in Firebase Analytics, after which it is deleted automatically.
- Server logs: kept for a limited period, as needed to operate and secure the Service.
- Support emails: kept for as long as needed to handle your request.
Data Security
Link to section: Data Security- Connections between the app and our servers are encrypted using HTTPS (TLS).
- Access rules on our database limit your scan history to your own app identifier.
- App credentials are kept in your device’s secure storage.
- Access to our production systems is limited to authorized Nexdev personnel.
No method of transmitting or storing data is completely secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security. If you notice a security problem, contact us right away.

To make a request, such as deleting all of your data, email support@nexdev.codes. Because WoodSnap has no login, please send the request from the app’s support option, which includes your app identifier, so we can find your data. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.
